What creatine is
Creatine is a compound your body already makes and stores mostly in skeletal muscle, where it plays a role in the rapid energy system used during short, hard efforts. You also get small amounts from food, principally red meat and fish.
Creatine monohydrate is the form that appears in the overwhelming majority of the published literature. It is also the cheapest to manufacture at high purity, which is a rare case of the best-evidenced option also being the least expensive one.
What to look for in a creatine
Creatine is close to a commodity, which makes the questions worth asking quite narrow: what form is it, what purity, and is that purity independently verified? A creatine that cannot answer those three questions is not worth paying a premium for.
Be sceptical of exotic forms sold at a large markup. The burden of proof sits with anything claiming to improve on monohydrate, and for most of them that evidence does not exist yet.
Common questions
What is FORGE?
FORGE is the SCHMIEDE creatine. It sits alongside the SCHMIEDE whey system and IGNITE pre-workout as part of the same range.
What is creatine monohydrate?
Creatine monohydrate is the most studied form of creatine, a compound the body also produces naturally and stores mainly in muscle. It is one of the most extensively researched sports supplements available.
Why is monohydrate the common form?
Creatine monohydrate is the form used in the large majority of published research and is inexpensive to produce at high purity. Alternative forms are typically more expensive without a comparable body of evidence behind them.
